We didn't want to leave! Fantastic employees & management.
Highlight of Our Trip - Dive the Outer Great Barrier ReefThis was a splurge - and well worth it! Staff was exceptional (thanks Ryan, in particular), service impeccable, location terrific, activity options excellent. We snorkeled in a giant clam garden (think giant clams that are 1-1.5 meters in length...), kayaked into mangroves, explored the local trails - but the truly remarkable experience was taking a 1 hour SCUBA lesson followed by two dives (with instructor comfortably close) on the outer reef. The food was wonderfully prepared, presented and absolutely delicious - they even incorporate any specific likes/dislikes on a plate-by-plate basis. Amazing time!
Pioneer bay is an awesome anchorage. Island is beautiful
Such a beautiful place to be. The island is gorgeous, the amenities are plentiful and they are very kind to all of their guests. Thanks for a great stay!
I thought the island was named after Orpheus the legendary musician, poet, and prophet in ancient Greece.. But no it's named after HMS Orpheus a Royal Navy corvette that served as the flagship of the Australian squadron. Orpheus sank off the west coast of Auckland, New Zealand on 7 February 1863: 189 crew out of the ship's complement of 259 died in the disaster, making it the worst maritime tragedy to occur in New Zealand waters. The name 'Orpheus' was given to the island in 1887 by Lieutenant G. E. Richards whilst he captained HMQS Paluma and surveyed the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia. From the depths of tragedy was born a true piece of heaven. Located just 80km north of Townsville, amidst the magical waters of the Great Barrier Reef, the island stretches across 11km of immaculate turquoise coastline, and comprises of a pristine National Park and surrounding World Heritage-listed Marine Park. Access is either via a 30 minute helicopter journey from Townsville, or a 45 - 70 minutes from Cairns pending the type of chopper.Orpheus is now a 6 star Queensland Island Resort which I rate very highly among world standards. The all inclusive food and beverages (beer & wine) takes all the worries out of having to think - and thinking is something to need to avoid when taking a break from the outside world. Guests are encouraged to alter the daily menu's pending their tastes, dietary needs or what they really desire - you even get to meet the chefs upon arrival!Orpheus has a terrific infinity pool. 25 metres of liquid dreams - you literally melt into the temperature and surroundings. Then a voice awakens you 'Anyone for more champagne?' OMG - we have landed on Fantasy Island! There's fishing, snorkelling, diving, kayaking, floating, walk paths - whatever you want to do in the short time you have to enjoy the island. Take a gourmet picnic hamper and motorised dinghy and find a secluded beach - the island is your oyster (or your lamb chop if you dislike seafood)The staff & managers go out of their way to make your stay as close to perfect as they can. They remember everything you prefer or dream of and the next minute it's arranged. A special note to the outgoing manager Ranaul Crabb and his lovely wife. Ranaul was a true professional - probably the best hospitality manager I've ever seen in action or met - he will be a hard act to follow.A couple of wines that were very impressive and included in the drink package. Airlie Bank NV from Punt Road, Yarra Valley and Farm to Table Sauvignon Blanc from Fowles Wines Victoria. I'm getting thirty again just writing about those wines!Orpheus is very much a secret to the outside world and offers their lucky guests the ultimate in tropical escapism. Orpheus is the Houdini of Island Resorts. You will very much regret the sight of the helicopter when it returns to collect you and take you back to reality.
